4 Reasons Your Business is Spending So Much on Electricity

submitted on 2 September 2019
Utility bills are something all businesses have to deal with, and depending on your situation, they can actually become crippling. Often, business owners assume that’s what they have to pay and just do. But many don’t realise that they’re making mistakes that could easily be fixed and allow them to significantly reduce their energy costs. Here are a few reasons your electricity bills might be so high.

You’re Working with the Wrong Company
Electricity prices can vary greatly between providers, and sometimes, just making the switch or giving them a call to see what can be done could save you money. In many cases, you could get them to actually cut your costs. Some companies will be better for residential clients while others will offer preferential rates to businesses. There are plenty of comparison sites that you can use to compare quotes between companies quick and find the best one for you. If you’re looking for a comparison tool, look at this site.

Your Building is Leaking
Having an airtight building is one of the best ways to keep energy costs under control. A poorly insulated building costs more to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Not only should you make sure that your building’s insulation is up to date, but also that you replace any old fixtures with new ones. If you have old windows, then you should consider switching for multi pane ones. Another thing you could do is install weather-stripping on windows and doors.

You’re Using Incandescent Bulbs
If you’re using incandescent bulbs, then that’s a huge part of the problem right there. Incandescent bulbs make no sense from an energy efficiency standpoint and should be replaced by CFL or LED lights. Both of these options consume much less energy, and won’t require to be replaced as often. Not only that, but LED lights produce much brighter light than other models. Making the switch to LED could help you cut your lighting energy consumption by as much as 90%.

Give Your Water Heater Some Help
A lot of people may not be aware of it, but there are many things that can be done to reduce how much energy your water heater is using. For one, you could turn it off when you don’t need it, and only start it up before your first employees come in. Another thing you could do is simply reduce its temperature by a few degrees. This alone could greatly reduce the amount of energy the water heater will need to keep water warm.

You could also insulate the water heater to help it maintain heat better. Adding an insulation jacket and insulation around the pipes while reducing the temperature will help you cut your water heating costs significantly.

While you have no choice but to pay your utility bills, they don’t have to be so high. If you follow these few simple tips, you’ll be able to identify where you’re overspending and make the proper adjustments.
