Cost-Effective Advertising with a Pull Banner

submitted on 18 September 2017
banners

Using pull banners, or pull up banners, is a practical and cost-effective strategy to help build your brand and grow your business. However, success depends on careful consideration of some key points before finalising the design of your banner – to ensure it has maximum impact.

Here we look at the importance of location, message, colour combination, images and fonts when it comes to creating a pull banner that really stands out.

Location
Where you position your pull banners is just as critical as your actual business location. You can position a large banner immediately outside your business, to grab the attention of passing drivers and pedestrians. Avoid positioning your banner in a place which is difficult to see from the road, or pavement, or inadvertently obscuring the name of your business, especially if you have a retail outlet such as a store, café or restaurant. You can also use pull banners internally, to guide customers to certain areas or highlight the location of products on special offer. Internal pull banners should create interest in customers, and prompt them to enquire about products.

What's your message?
Be clear about what you want the banner to achieve. It could be to emphasise a special promotion or event, or create greater visibility from the street; whatever the purpose, the best messages are short and to the point – instantly understood by passers-by or customers within your business. People today are extremely busy and constantly distracted, especially by their smartphones, so your banner needs to make an immediate impact and grab their attention.

Try to condense your message into between six and nine words, as people in a hurry are not likely to bother to read much more than this, especially if the banner is outside. Use brief but exciting words or phrases, persuasive language, and don’t forget to include a clear call to action – what do you want them to do next?

Colour combination and fonts
To create a truly stand-out banner design, don’t overlook the importance of the right colour combination(s). For outdoor use, research provides evidence that certain combinations of colour are much easier to read, especially from a distance; for example, black on white, black on yellow, and white on blue.

Try highlighting important information using a different colour and font, oversize typography can work exceedingly well for outdoor banners; but avoid using too many colours overall, as it can make the design confusing, and more difficult to read. Check out the significance of various colours to ensure you choose a combination that fits your brand and business. Images
If you want to include an image, make sure its super high quality once printed in large format on the banner. Consult your banner printing company regarding the best resolution for images depending on the overall banner surface size and the distance from which it will be viewed.

Designing a pull banner to successfully promote your brand and business is both effective and practical, and with some forethought regarding the content, it can be used again and again, making it a cost-effective advertising strategy too.
