It involves having sites on different C-classes. You don’t need to worry too much about the terminology, this essentially means that you can host sites on different IP addresses.

Search engines these days look at the profile of a website, as well as the site content itself and hundreds of other SEO factors. If an algorithm recognises that multiple sites on the same IP are interlinking, or linking to a specific site, then red flags will be raised. While this may seem trivial, and it isn’t a defining factor in most cases, it could be the edge that takes your site from position 4 for a keyword to position 3, or even 2 to 1. If you and your competition’s website are matched on every other SEO aspect the speed of the sites could be what gives one website the advantage.

Another factor to consider is the uptime and downtime of the hosting. Some hosting platforms may cause larger periods of downtime than other platforms. Google and other search engines won’t rank your website well if you’re experiencing significant downtime. In general, downtime will also affect how many visitors you’ll attract and retain.

The security of your website may have an indirect effect on your website and its ranking, too. This is mainly because hackers can infiltrate your website and as an indirect result drop your site. This will stop you from showing up on search engine results. A breech in security may also cause more downtime and slow your loading speed.

This doesn’t mean that shared hosting or VPS (virtual private server) hosting won’t be effective. It’s possible to gain a good ranking with either of these hosting plan options. They can both offer fast load times and can handle heavy traffic, as long as the servers are being used in the proper fashion. That being said, if you’ve done everything properly with regards to SEO practices and you’re noticing that your website is loading slowly, and that there are a growing number of sites on your c-class, it may be time to make a switch of host.
