Where To Spend Money In Your Business

submitted on 17 August 2018
No matter whether you have a limited budget or you have a lot of money behind you, choosing carefully where that money will be spent when you are starting a business is an important task. Spend too much in one area and you won’t have enough to spend in another. Spend too little on something and you might be wasting your money altogether. You really need to know you are getting the most for your money, and that you are spending it in the right places. Here are some of the most important areas to spend money on when running a business.

Marketing
Marketing is crucial to the longevity and success of your business, large or small. Without the right kind of marketing, no one is ever going to know you exist. There is always so much competition out there that you could easily be lost in the crowd unless you have a good marketing budget that can make you stand out. No matter how amazing and wonderful your services or products are, without good marketing, they will be wasted. Ideally, you should look to professionals to do the majority of your marketing for you because they will know what to do and how to do it. It’s true you will need to spend money on this, and potentially a large amount of money at that, but it should, when done right, pay you back in new customers and sales.

To start with, you will need to carry out (or engage a third party to carry out) market research so that you know how you should be targeting with your advertising. Then you can come up with a marketing campaign that speaks to these people directly.

Something that you can do yourself while the professional marketing expert works on other aspects of your campaign is to use social media to your advantage. It will cost very little (perhaps nothing at all) but could help to cement your company’s name and ethos in people’s minds. Come up with interesting posts so that people are more likely to share them and boost your reach as organically as possible.

Security
Your business needs to be secure in all senses of the word if people are going to choose to use your services over someone else’s. A secure business is a trustworthy one, and it will help your reputation if everything is safe both regarding the physical side of the business and online data.

Physically, it is important to invest in CCTV and alarms, for example. In some cases, you may even choose to employ security guards. It will all depend on the kind of business you operate, where you are working from, and what your budget is. Your business needs to be kept secure digitally as well, as just one cyber attack can ruin everything you have worked towards, destroying your reputation and your income.

Installing good firewalls and antivirus software will go a long way to ensuring that your company’s digital data is as safe as possible, but you will also need to have a contingency plan in place just in case there is a breach.

Website
If you run a business, regardless of whether it’s a bricks-and-mortar store or solely online, you need a website; it is a vital part to your success. You don’t need to sell anything on it, but there does need to be a web presence otherwise you could easily be passed over when potential customers are searching for your product and services online. Websites can cost a lot of money to get right, but it is worth doing to be more noticeable. Plus, if you do have an online shop associated with your business, you can open up an entirely new revenue stream, boosting your income hugely.

Premises
Some businesses can be successfully run from home, from a spare bedroom or garage. However, this is not true of all businesses, and if you need a professional office space or construction area, then you will need to look into your budget and ensure there is enough money to pay the rent or mortgage as well as all the utility bills that go with it. It can seem like a huge expense, and in some cases it is, but there are ways around having to spend a fortune on somewhere to work. For example, you could hire office space on an as and when basis, paying per day or even per hour. Or you could buy used construction office trailers. Even new trailers are only a fraction of the expense of an office.

Accounting
Although in some cases, it is possible for a business owner to wear the majority of hats they need to run their business, when it comes to accounting, it is far better to spend money and hire a professional. Getting your accounts wrong can have serious consequences and create big problems for your business moving forward. There are large fines to pay, for example, and you will be on a ‘watch list’ so that you have more frequent inspections.

Accountants can also help you to save money, of course. There will be ways and means of off-setting certain expenses against income, thus ensuring that your tax bill is lower than you might have thought. Since only those who are experts in accounting and tax will know what these methods are, it is well worth spending money to hire that expert.

Insurance
Insurance is the kind of thing that people don’t like to think about too much. If insurance is required, then something must have gone wrong. However, setting up a good level of insurance right from the start means that, should something actually go wrong, you will be covered and can continue trading with barely a pause. Having insurance will give you peace of mind, and it can make a big difference to your customers as well. You don’t have to be a huge business turning over massive amounts of money for insurance to be worth it. Anything that means you don’t have to pay out personally or from the business to fix a mistake is a good idea.
