What Specialist Equipment Does Your Waste Business Need?

submitted on 16 November 2020
Running a business in a specialised industry such as waste collection and disposal is always going to require you to plan the equipment that you need to purchase or hire. There are so many pieces that you might need to invest in to be able to run your business, so it is important that you think about where you invest your money and what type of equipment is likely to give you the best return on your investment (ROI).

Is It Better to Hire?
You need to think about whether it would be more cost-effective to hire the machinery instead of buy it outright. If you know that you are not going to need the equipment permanently, then hiring it out from another company on a short-term or contract basis might be right for you.

However, if you are going to need this equipment permanently, you should definitely think about purchasing in it. For example, if you know that you are going to have to collect a lot of waste as part of the business, it might be worth looking into refuse vehicles for sale that your company can use. This would allow you to get the equipment you need, brand it to match the rest of your fleet, and always have what you need on hand. It might be a higher initial investment for you, but it could be worth it in the long-term, and there are a number of finance options that you could look at the spread the cost.

What Demand Exists?
Is there actually demand for the service that would use this specialist equipment? It is all well and good to invest in equipment because there is potential that you might need it for right now, but that is very different from having a long-term demand.

During the initial Covid crisis domestic waste increased dramatically, requiring councils and private companies to expand their fleets. Conversely, commercial waste fell as workplaces closed.

It is important that you assess why you want to make the purchase or hire before committing to a deal.

You might have noticed a gap in the market or had to adapt your business due to changing demand patterns. In these scenarios, it might be perfectly reasonable to consider hire while you assess the long-term demand.

How Will Specialist Equipment It Change Your Business?
Specialist equipment is never an idle purchase, and you need to know how it is going to improve the operation and processes of your business when you make the purchase. Which staff will need to be trained to use it? Will you have to expand the team to include someone who already has the training? Will it fundamentally change the services you are able to offer as a company? These are all important questions that you need to make sure you can answer before acquiring the equipment.

Investing in specialist equipment be it a tools, refuse vehicles, a bin lifter, or other equipment for your waste business can be a great move as long as you choose a reputable and experienced supplier.
