So You Want to Be an Uber Driver...
Being an Uber driver brings with it a number of requirements. You can't just decide to be an Uber driver and register yourself on their app and that's it. Let's take a look at the requirements :- - you must have no criminal convictions
- a valid driving licence (of course), usually with at least one year's driving experience
- have an eligible 4-door vehicle
- Meet the minimum age to drive in your city
- pass the online screening
- provide necessary documentation (proof of residency in your city, driver's licence, vehicle insurance records
So, if you can meet all of the above requirements, being an Uber driver can be a great way for you to earn extra money whenever you have the time.
What should I expect? Firstly, be aware that every driver and passenger are rated by the other party on each journey. This means that you really do have to take this job super-seriously if you want to keep it. You are rated 1 to 5, and if your average rating falls below 4.2, you will be reviewed. That means you need to be punctual, curteous, the car must be clean and free of any odours, and you must get the passenger to their destination safely and in a reasonable timeframe.
It works both ways too...customers can't be too unreasonable or rude to drivers, lest they also receive low ratings. A driver will know the rating of a prospective new passenger, so if the rating is low, they may (rightly) refuse the job. In this way, passengers know they have to be reasonable, and drivers can avoid the unreasonable, low-scoring passengers - making the job that much more pleasant.
What about the pay? Uber drivers get 80% of the fare. Of course, fares will vary from country to country, so you will have to research typical Uber fares in your location. However, it's been proven in the last number of years that Uber drivers can make a good living from driving so long as they are professional and put the hours in. You will need to maintain the upkeep of your car, and factor in that you will be driving a lot more miles than you normally do - therefore, a regular servicing of the car is required to ensure it's running properly.
